What are the most common mistakes end-users make when purchasing a CCTV system?

Once you decide to invest a certain amount into safety and comfort, you should also try to understand the technical issues to avoid overpaying and get exactly the set of options you planned.

Carefully consider and describe in detail the tasks the CCTV system should solve, and consult the authorized specialist. Find out which solutions will be basic and what additional tasks should be solved. Be ready for many puzzles. The set of hardware and software you will buy will depend on that information.

Choosing the right cameras is very important. You need to consider such specs as resolution, FPS, sensor size and quality, aperture and more. For example, most of the time, a 2 MP camera with a 1/2.8 sensor will have a better picture than a 4 MP camera with a 1/4 sensor. For correct operation of Smart Analytical Modules, for example, License Number Plate Recognition, developers have prepared recommendations for various camera specifications, such as minimal light sensitivity, minimal pixel density, recommended minimal shutter speed, WDR, etc. The right choice of the NVR is no less important than cameras or any other CCTV system components.

Please note that VMS software products differ much, have limitations and cannot match, for example, redundancy methods, archive export functions, and operator interface user-friendliness.

Pay attention to the compatibility of CCTV components and their integration with VMS software. For example, this can happen with Access Control or Point of Sale devices - any authentication type or event may not be supported by the software.

To integrate the third-party software feature into your system, it is recommended to examine the API/SDK documentation deeper to make sure that the whole functionality is fully accessible. Avoid buying substandard equipment from unlicensed vendors. Cabling, connectors, and good-quality lenses are just as important as the right cameras or NVRs. Also, be sure to take care of lightning protection so that the security system can be at your service as long as possible.
